6th Dragoons (Inniskillings)

Recent ebay purchase, these are Newline Design, fairly slight compared to HH or DK, but not a bad match. They were painted to a level / style very similar to my own, so just needed a coat of gloss varnish and re-basing.

Posed these with a DK Royal Horse Guard for comparison.

Edit: Added front and side view comparisons for Captain Nolan:-

The Newline figures definitely look slighter, but strangely take up more space laterally than DK. They only just fit 2 abreast on a 30mm frontage base. Could be because I'm comparing DK one-piece castings with Newline separate horse / rider combo?

Edit: Adding comparison pics of Newline and HH 'dismountable' as requested by Mark D. What was Marcus Hinton thinking of to describe these as dismountable? The HH Hussar was part of a swap with Tony S, they will get completed very soon! Definitely wouldn't mix these in the same unit.

  1. Can you post a few more size comparison photos, perhaps single figures, front and side views?

  2. Thank you so much. Yes, the one piece castings are definitely slimmer than even the HH 2 piece cavalry castings (see my blog post on the topic at http://battlesandcampaigns.blogspot.com/2017/07/basing-dilema.html). I belive I have decided to base my cavalry on 40mm wide bases.

    1. Thanks Matt, they were an ebay listing I couldn't resist, almost table-ready and probably half the price of vintage HH.

      Cheers

  5. Interesting I would have said that Newline are shorter and a bit dumpier than HH, especially the rather thin HH caused by being copied. Its the fatter legs that take up the space when basing.nThey sit round and proud on the horse whereas actual riders legs flatten a bit into the horse. I saw those units on Ebay and thought the pruce reasonable, espevially if someone was intending to add a few units quickly. If you are going to tart them a bit then spray on matt varnish, put on a few highlights, then gloss them. Honestly it does bring the figures to life and that extra bit of or a detail or two looks great...and makes them yours.

  6. Oh , and it would beveasy to put some white socks and faces on the horses. That would look good.

    1. Thanks LG, as a horse rider myself I know the importance of 'keeping your leg on'!. I did add a few white markings on the horses, not too many as these aren't as common as most wargamers would think. They do look smart though.

  7. Thanks for the pictures. I did a similar comparison and felt that Newline cavalry could be used on the same table with HH but in separate units. Unfortunately, the infantry are a bit too small. SHQ infantry/gunners are a very good match and can be used in the same units as HH figures. The SHQ cavalry are noticeably bigger.

    1. Thanks Anon, I'll take your advice and not go for Newline infantry. I've got some Scruby Bavarians which are also small compared to HH, I'll post pics once they get promoted up the leadpile.

  8. It would be interesting to see a Newline figure compared to a Hinton 2 piece 'dismountable' cavalry figure.
